The Henley Royal Regatta is an unique event in the rowing scene, taking place in Henley, United Kingdom. The long lasting history of the traditional british racing tournament has shaped this to an even more well-known and respected event all over the world.

Annually, the competition is fought out on the River Thames about one mile 550 yards (2,112 metres), upstream. The event lasts over 5 days and is always scheduled for the first weekend in July. This year it will take place on Wednesday 28th of June until Sunday the 2nd of July. Since the event is very popular, it attracts thousands of visitors to watch over 200 races at international standard. The crews consist of Olympians as well as new participants. This year will be the second largest entry ever since 577 crews will participate, including 144 crews from 15 foreign nations. Already 60 crews are originated from the USA. Also 24 medalists including ten gold-medal winners of the Olympic Games in Rio 2016 will participate in several crews.

the Henley Royal Regatta Committee makes their selection of crews who are obliged to qualify. The crews who have been selected will qualify the Friday before the Regatta. The fastest crews will proceed to the actual event, but only the qualifying times of the non-qualifying teams will be released to the public. For the purpose of achieving the most satisfying, fairest and thrilling competition, some outstanding crews in the Draw are `selected` for certain events.
Once the competition starts, the procedure is different than any other racing events. Instead of six only two rowing crews are competing abreast. The winner proceeds to the next round. Since the first event, every reigning monarch has been the patron of the event. Therefore, Queen Elizabeth II. is currently the royal patron of the Henley Royal Regatta 2017.

The spectators can purchase tickets online and experience the Regatta very closely. Several enclosures as the Steward´s or Regatta enclosure offer seating alongside the river, restaurants and outside dining area and bar. A certain dresscode needs to be followed for those areas.
