From 11 to 22 May 2016, the „Festival de Cannes“ (Cannes Film Festival) is celebrated. During this time the beach promenade „Croisette“ transformed into a large, red carpet.
The International Film Festival was created on the initiative of Jean Zay, Minister for Education and Fine Arts, who was keen to establish an international cultural event in France to rival the Venice Film Festival. The first edition of the Festival was originally set to be held in Cannes in 1939 under the presidency of Louis Lumière. However, it was not until over a year after the war ended that it finally took place, on 20 September 1946. It was subsequently held every September – except in 1948 and 1950 – and then every May from 1952 onwards.
While early editions of the Festival were primarily a social event from which almost all of the films went away with an award, the appearance of stars from around the world on the Festival’s red carpet and increasing media coverage quickly earned it a legendary international reputation.
In the 1950s, the Festival became more popular thanks to the attendance of celebrities such as Kirk Douglas, Sophia Loren, Grace Kelly, Brigitte Bardot, Cary Grant, Romy Schneider, Alain Delon, Simone Signoret, Gina Lollobrigida, and many more.
Also this year, numerous celebrities will come to the Mediterranean. Robert De Niro, Sean Penn, Woody Allen are just as expected as Vanessa Paradis, Jodie Foster or Steven Spielberg. The competition has as always in international films offer. Renowned directors such as Pedro Almodóvar or not yet so known -if well as Excellent-German director Maren Ade, hoping for the Golden Palm.
The 69th Festival de Cannes will be presided by the Australian director, screenwriter and producer, George Miller. Cannes has always sought to adopt a universal and international approach, and in tune with this tradition, George Miller will be surrounded by eight luminaries of world cinema, from Iran, Denmark, United States, Italia, France, Canada and Hungary. The Jury will therefore include four women and four men around George Miller. Their task will be to decide between the 21 films in Competition in order to select the winners – to be announced on stage at the Closing Ceremony on Sunday 22nd May. The film awarded by the Palme d’or will be screened this same evening, in the presence of the Jury and the entire team of the winning film. Some press conferences, shows and red carpet events will be broadcast live on the Internet. Here are the way to the livestream on whats live?.
